What
Meadow Voles (Genus Microtus)Observer
wbenishDescription
Sadly - I believe that this individual was killed by our mower (while operated by me at very low velocity). This was in the South West field near the mailbox. It pains me greatly to have lost such a beautiful little creature.
I believe there are many more of its cousins remaining in and near that field. I think it had been at least two years since we last mowed that field in an effort to promote native plants, insects, etc. We also had been seeing an Am. Kestrel hunting routinely at and near this field (~1 or 2 acres).
AI suggested three different vole species as most likely. I suspect “meadow vole” (m. Penn?)

What
Carolina Mantis (Stagmomantis carolina)Observer
wbenishDescription
Native per feedback. Mottling and body shape (round, not flat) are great ID points!
Since receiving ID tips, I saw a non-native for comparison without the mottling on the arms and with a much more flat / sharp edged body.
Initial notes below:
Praying Mantis- pretty certain based on size that this may not be the native.
AI also suggested Chinese Mantis (tenodera sinensis)

Locust Borer (Megacyllene robiniae)Observer
wbenishDescription
On goldenrod. In back40, just below tear drop.
Per info on iNat page:
Endemic insect. Feeds on goldenrod pollen. Lays eggs on black locust which do bore into the black locust which can lead to fungal infection and stunted growth and vulnerability to wind damage. Interesting.
Edit - later the same morning, I saw another individual also on goldenrod in the SW field.
