Ever since I learned my first binomial as a naturalist for the Whiting Boy Scout Reservation in northern Arizona in 1970, I have been fascinated with taxonomy and knowing plants. Many years later as a climbing guide, I would spend time in different parts of the country and from year to year I would focus on the local interesting plants. In Arizona it was cactus and other desert plants; North Carolina, fungi and deciduous trees; sometimes it was some curiosity about a particular plant group, other times it would be to look into a group I did not know well. My cousin, Bob Fry, was a naturalist in Yosemite park for more than 40 years and I learned lots from him. Like myself, he was inspired by my mother to love and observe the outdoors. Currently I have settled in the Sierra Nevada and plan to stay a while; so many plants to see and seasons to watch.
