I began bird-watching when 14 years old and was very active with the local Audubon club. I managed to reach the Minnesota state goal of 300 bird species. A decade later, I started identifying mushrooms with the Minnesota Mycological Society and then became science advisor with the Illinois Mycological Association. My master's research was on Lactarius in Minnesota while my doctoral research was ectomycorrhizal mushrooms of old-growth forests. I joined the Field Museum mycology team in 1997, researching the fungi of the Chicago Region continuously for 20 years. I have also operated the Voucher Collection Project of the North American Mycological Association for 20 years. I am compiling the mycoflora for the Chicago Region. See www.mycoguide.com
