I have recently retired as a RECE (my second career) at KCS with most of my time spent in Kindergarten classes. I tried to incorporate science in my classes as much as I could and ran a lunchtime club called Science is Fun for Grades 1-3. "They" called me "The Butterfly Lady". I am a self-proclaimed expert on raising Monarchs, Painted Ladies, and Black Swallowtails, as well as a few moths. My fall Science is Fun clubs always took part in symbolic monarch migration in conjunction with journeynorth.org . A large paper butterfly created by the group was sent to Mexico every year to simulate monarch migration, and this accompanied communications with Mexican students as well as other schools across USA and Canada. I also introduced and took the lead on vermicomposting.
Since covid19, I have spent a lot of time on my deck and became increasingly interested in birds. I started doing bird counts for ebird.org, and now it has become a passion. I am learning so much about birds with the help of a good set of binoculars and Merlin Sound ID.
