I am keenly interested in investigating the behavior and chemical ecology of tripartite relationships between insects, plants, and microorganisms with the ultimate goal to develop effective novel tools that attractant and trap insects in terms of integrated pest management. These includes identification of chemical cues and signals used by insects for host recognition, plant responses to herbivores, insect community ecology and coevolution. For me it is fascinating to learn more about the evolution of insect olfaction as well as to observe and understand how trace amounts of chemical compounds modulate insect behavior. The current focus of my research is on Halyomorpha halys an invasive, destructive pest insect that feed on over 100 species of plants, including many agricultural crops. In addition, I have a strong interest in the surveillance and management of insect vectors of human and animal diseases and recently in growing insects for food and animal feed.
