John Kelly on conservation science.

John Kelly says that when he arrived in Marshall, in 1988, virtually no one was studying birds on Tomales Bay. Mr. Kelly, who has a master’s in wildlife from Humboldt State and a doctorate in ecology from the University of California, Davis, had just landed a job at Audubon Canyon Ranch’s newly acquired property: an old hunting lodge where herons, egrets and numerous other birds still live, eat and gather on shores just outside the offices

Milpitas ‘Eagle cam’ gives viewers a glimpse of the wild side.

The pair of bald eagles who have fascinated bird watchers ever since they set up a nest in a Milpitas redwood tree last year have gone prime time.

The city of Milpitas has installed an “eagle cam” atop a utility pole to provide live video streaming of the nesting birds’ activities in the tree at Curtner Elementary School.

Words on Birds: A perspective on rare birds.

I am often asked what is the most rare bird that I have ever seen. That’s a difficult question. First, I would have to qualify the term “rare.” Is it rare in the world? Rare in North America? Or is it a more local question?

Outdoor Report: Breeding waterfowl up 39 percent in California.

Melanie Weaver, the DFW scientist in charge of the state's waterfowl program, said that waterfowl numbers topped a half-million for the first time in six years, and the total of nearly 550 million waterfowl this year is the highest since the 558 million tallied in 2011. It is also 39 percent higher than the 397 million tally for 2017.

On California Coast, Endangered Tern Depends on Healthy Anchovy Population.

Anchovy are vital prey for more than 50 species, including seabirds, salmon, tuna, whales, sea lions, and other marine mammals, and are an essential part of one of the most vibrant marine ecosystems in the world. That’s why The Pew Charitable Trusts has long advocated for better anchovy management—including setting catch limits based upon up-to-date population estimates.
