  • We will not know for sure what position we were in until the last city (Maui) has finalised their records. 9am Monday Maui time is 3am Tuesday Hong Kong time.

Again, a MASSIVE THANK YOU to all of you that incorporated the CNC into your normal activities, made specific activities or just promoted amongst your students, family, friends and colleagues. We have smashed our previous records and it is all down to your hard work and energy.

Also, a MASSIVE THANK YOU to all of you who offered identifications to our observations throughout the CNC and last week. I know it’s a thankless task yet you’ve helped to inform and educate all of our participants as well as improving the iNaturalist database around our city.

Going forward, I wholeheartedly encourage the use of iNaturalist within your schools, organisations and communities. It still is a fantastic strategy to get the public more aware and engaged with local, and global, biodiversity. I’d be happy to discuss this with anybody who wishes to take it further.

Photos & Videos:

Thanks for all of the videos and photos that some of you have sent me so far.

Please send any photos/videos that you have of your activities to me (perhaps through a link on Google Drive?). I have an idea to create marketing materials for next year’s event and/or organise a follow-up event that celebrates Hong Kong's CNC involvement, perhaps a gallery of some of the pictures taken on iNaturalist and pictures of participants in action. I will, of course, keep you all updated in this regard and credit appropriately.

Post-CNC Sharing Session:

At some point I shall be organising a session in which we can all describe our experiences, concerns and participant feedback. This is incredibly important as we would want to improve on our outreach and activities next year plus the Main Organisers for the CNC would be very interested in it. Currently, I am thinking about the beginning of June but will reach out again when I have a proper venue and date/time in mind.

Once again, thank you so much for getting involved.
Will speak soon.

Cheers!
Shaun

April 30, 2019

Thank you so much for getting involved...but it's not over yet! :)

Dear All,

Wow! What a journey!

Firstly, a MASSIVE thank you to all of you that incorporated the CNC into your normal activities, made specific activities and promoted amongst your students, family, friends, clients and colleagues. Your efforts are truly appreciated.

We didn’t quite make all our targets but we certainly smashed our previous records.
As of 3:30pm, 30/4, it was as follows:

Observations: 25,963. (2018: 20,268. 8th/68 cities)
Species Logged: 3,111. (2018: 2932. 4th/68 cities)
Observers: 1,086. (2018: 755. 7th/68 cities)

But it’s not over yet!

If you still have pictures taken from April 26-29th, either on your smartphone or on your camera, you can still upload them to this project and they will still count in our totals, every little helps!

Also, there's still a chance that more species will be uncovered, so for all of you enthusiasts and ecologists out there, we could still do with your help in offering identifications to these observations. The links to mini-projects that contributed to the main project are at the bottom of this message.

We have until 9am, Monday 6th May (HKT).
This is the deadline for uploads and identifications and when results will be finalised.

Identification Party:

There’s still plenty of places at our ID Party to further identify CNC-HK observations on iNaturalist and engage with participants online.

Date: Thursday 2nd May, 2019
Time: Anytime between 10am - 6pm
Venue: WWF – Central Visitor Centre. 1 Tramway Path, Central.
Registration: https://forms.gle/vhj5QGB8769Wyunt7
Refreshments: Food and Drinks provided.

I have budget to compensate you for your time during this session plus I'll have some food and drink to keep us going. Should be fun! In the registration link, please let me know when you may come and how long you can stay for. Please remember to bring your laptops!

Photos & Videos:

Thanks for all of the videos and photos that some of you have sent me so far.

April 20, 2019

ONE WEEK TO GO!!!

Hi Everyone!

I hope you're all excited about the CITY NATURE CHALLENGE and are busy getting your phone and camera batteries charged! Once again, Hong Kong has entered this competition with over 170 cities worldwide and all participants have to do is take photographs of nature (trees, plants, insects, birds, fungi, fish, reptiles, rocky shore/mangrove sps etc) and upload them onto iNaturalist. That's it!!!

Competition Dates: Friday 26th April - Monday 29th April
Identification Dates: Friday 26th April - Sunday 5th May

You have been tagged as you are one of the most prolific iNaturalist observers and identifiers in Hong Kong and I would love for you to get involved! Here are the targets for this year (with 2018 results for comparison).

Observations: 35,000. (2018: 20,268. 8th/68 cities)
Species Logged: 3,000. (2018: 2932. 4th/68 cities)
Observers: 3,500. (2018: 755. 7th/68 cities)

IDENTIFICATION PARTY

As many of you are experts in your field, I’d like to invite you to an ‘ID Party’ to further identify observations on iNaturalist and engage with participants online.

Date: Thursday 2nd May, 2019
Time: Anytime between 10am - 6pm
Venue: WWF – Central Visitor Centre. 1 Tramway Path, Central.
Registration: https://forms.gle/vhj5QGB8769Wyunt7
Refreshments: Food and Drinks provided.

This is important as it encourages participants to continue using iNaturalist and develop their interest in local biodiversity. I have budget to compensate you for your time during this session plus I'll have some food and drink to keep us going. Should be fun! In the registration link, please let me know when you may come and how long you can stay for. Please remember to bring your laptops!

LINKED PROJECTS

The projects below are specific to locations and organisations yet their observations will all count towards the Hong Kong totals. I would really appreciate it if we could keep an eye on these 'bitesize' projects so that we can manage responses effectively. :)

Once again, I realise this will be a massive undertaking with lots of observations being uploaded at once yet I really hope you all can get involved, either by going out and taking pictures, identifying them or both.

This is a great chance to show the world the amazing biodiversity we have.

Cheers!
Shaun

CALLING ALL HONG KONG iNATURALISTAS!!!

Hi Everyone!

The CITY NATURE CHALLENGE 2019 is nearly upon us!
A FANTASTIC worldwide project to increase engagement with nature.

Once again, Hong Kong has entered a competition with over 170 cities worldwide and all participants have to do is take photographs of nature (trees, plants, insects, birds, fungi, fish, reptiles, rocky shore/mangrove sps etc) and upload them onto iNaturalist.

Examples of involvement could include:

1) Incorporate the CNC 2019 in any activity (research, data collection, nature walk, mini-bioblitz, etc) already planned between April 26-29th. (Or organise an activity specifically for the CNC 2019 on these dates)

2) Encourage students, colleagues, clients and friends to participate in the CNC 2019 through official channels or personal networks.

3) Assistance in identifying species on the iNaturalist project in the week following the CNC 2019.

Also, Macau will be joining in the fun this year and I'm sure they would appreciate any assistance.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask here or through email: s1martinhk@gmail.com
I'll be giving more updates as and when they come in. :)

Cheers!
