The Fern Tree Bushcare group, with support from NRM South and City of Hobart Bushcare, are undertaking a project to map and eradicate daphne laurel (Daphne laureola) from the Fern Tree area.
Daphne laurel is a highly invasive and toxic weed that thrives in wet, cool temperate forests. has become naturalised in parts of the U.S.A., Canada, and New Zealand, where it forms dense stands that out-compete native vegetation. In 2012 it was discovered growing in a small part of Fern Tree,Tasmania, probably originating from root stock used for ornamental Daphne species, then spread by birds. It is currently not known to occur anywhere else in Australia.
While the distribution of this weed is limited to a small area, complete eradication is an achievable aim. With funding provided by NRM South, volunteers from the Fern Tree Bushcare Group will thoroughly map the whole distribution using iNaturalist, then with support of contractors undertake works to eradicate the weed.
This project is for use by trained Bushcare volunteers to undertake the mapping component of the daphne laurel control program.
