Documenting the fungi of Saskatchewan. We are linked with the Fungi of Saskatchewan project at the Fungal Diversity Survey, https://fundis.org/ who also have an iNaturalist project you should consider submitting your observation to: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/fundis-fungal-diversity-survey
Being linked to the Fungal Diversity Survey we hope to have observations that are useful to scientists or conservationists and give as much chance for identification as possible. Here are some tips:
Please take clear, well-lit, in focus photographs. If you can, have the mushroom relatively large in the photo so its details can be seen clearly. Some things to make sure can be seen in some detail are: the mushroom cap, its under-surface (where spores are produced), the stem including the very bottom (which may initially be partially obscured by dirt, leaves, needles, etc.) If you pick the mushroom and have a chance to study it in more detail, you may want to cut the flesh and gills and note any staining, colour changes or milk/latex around the cut.
Adding a ruler or a common item (pocketknife, coin, pen, your hand) for scale in the photo helps show its size.
Please note what the mushroom is growing in (soil, leaf litter, on wood, on another mushroom, etc.) What trees are nearby is useful. These can simply be noted in text or shown in a photo. Include anything else noteworthy: smell, taste, recent weather, etc.
We know it is not always possible to obtain such detailed photos, nor to take the time to do everything above; we welcome your fungi observations in any case.
