Gail Achterman Wildlife Area BioBlitz 2019's Journal

November 20, 2019

Thank You!!!

The BioBlitz was such a fun day, one that left me encouraged and excited about the professional prospects of the young Oregon State University students who participated in this event, volunteering their time, energy, and expertise! While weather and site conditions weren't optimal (too dry, too cloudy, too cool), they nevertheless maintained enthusiasm and a willingness to explore every nook and cranny at the site. You all are exemplary naturalists who will contribute in a big way to your chosen fields in science, and I thank you for all your contributions! I look forward to future opportunities to get together again.

Prepping for Saturday

Looks like we will be in for some cool and cloudy weather, so dress accordingly. Water levels on the river are low and precipitation has been negligible, so I don't anticipate overly muddy conditions except in the channel and slough areas. Wear sturdy boots or mucks, not tennis shoes, denim pants and long-sleeve shirts, as the terrain is uneven and filled with fallen logs (yaaay for the salamanders!) and trip hazards such as blackberry vines. Don't forget lunch, snacks, and a water bottle. I will have water available for refills as well. The site is primitive, so prepare accordingly.

Don't forget to have your volunteer paperwork ready to go when we meet at the office at 8 am. Make sure your phone is charged up and if you have an external battery you might think to bring it along. The address is 7118 NE Vandenberg Avenue in Adair Village. Go north on Highway 99 about 5 miles past the hospital. Turn right on Vandenberg Avenue (Farm Food restaurant is located on the corner). Turn right again into the second drive and park. From there we will carpool to the site.

I look forward to meeting everyone and thank you for your participation and interest!
