We are starting a citizen science project to determine presence/absence of turtle species within the Loyalhanna Watershed, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; to determine "hotspots" for turtle habitat, especially breeding habitat for future land protection and habitat improvement; and to determine need for mitigation, such as "hotspots" for turtle mortality on roadways. iNaturalist provides the perfect platform for citizen scientists to submit their photos, allowing project managers to confirm species ID and gather the data. Also, observation locations can be made private or obscured, but by submitting to this iNaturalist traditional project, project managers can see the locations while potential collectors cannot. This project is managed by the Loyalhanna Watershed Association, overseen by a professional wildlife biologist, supported by the PA Fish and Boat Commission, and funded through a grant from the Laurel Highlands Conservation Landscape.
