Emerald View Park BioBlitz
Friday & Saturday, June 6-7, 2014
In partnership with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, the Mount Washington Community Development Corporation is holding a BioBlitz in Emerald View Park, Pittsburgh’s newest Regional Park located in Mount Washington, Duquesne Heights, and Allentown.
The BioBlitz will bring together scientists, students, and community members of all ages to:
- Conduct a biological inventory and produce a “snapshot” of as many living things as we can find in Emerald View Park.
- Engage in hands-on science education.
- Promote Emerald View Park and connect people to our urban natural spaces.
Date & Time:
Friday, June 6 (Owl Hike, 9 pm)
Friday, June 6 (Nocturnal collections, time tbd)
Saturday, June 7 (Bird Count, 6-10 am)
Saturday, June 7 (Plant & Animal surveys, Public participation, 10 am-2pm)
During the BioBlitz, scientists, experienced and novice naturalists, and interested community members of any ability will work together to conduct the inventory. Education is one of the primary goals of the event. Specialists will be broken into teams, with interested members of the public to assist with collection, sorting, and identification, where appropriate. Organizers will help to orient teams with maps of the area and some teams will go out into the field, while some will work at the home base. Several hands-on educational activities for the public will also take place on Saturday from 10-2. Food and drinks will be provided for volunteers. Portable restrooms will be available at the home base.
