November 18th, 2020 (Wednesday) 9:10-12:30 pm: 34 dead newts found
Weather was cool, it was raining at first, later on the rain stopped. Rainfall: (MTD: 0.81 in; YTD: 0.91 in). Data from - http://www.weathercat.net/wxraindetail.php
@tyap and me documented 34 dead newts, 12 of them juveniles. All dead newt other than one looked very fresh. At least one of them got killed while we were there. It was found dead on the road in front of Midpen site 2(?) after they already checked the area.
Other roadkills: 3 Arboreal Salamanders, 1 tree frog, one slender salamander, a moth, a beetle, 8 Jerusalem Crickets, 2 different centipedes.
Coverage: north part - the county park parking lot till the second stop sign.
Traffic: 3 trucks, 71 cars, 2 bikes, 16 pedestrians, and 14 cars parked by the road and in the parking lots. Also 3 Cal Fire helicopters practicing stuff around the lake.
We met the Midpen population study a few times. They were checking their traps, that had lots of cool spiders and many live newts. They removed some dead newts from the road, and they took photos before removing them. They also put the traffic study, right next to Priest Rock Trailhead.
The rowing club was open. All county park parking lots were open.

@merav, I'm glad Midpen is doing a traffic study. I think that's very important.

I agree! I wish it was by limekiln trailhead, but I guess that's better than nothing...

@merav, yes Limekiln would be a better location for the traffic study. It's kinda surprising how unfamiliar these people are with their own road.

Has the Midpen team shared any photos of live or dead newts with you as promised?

They have shared some photos, about 20 so far. We're still working on some technical issues with the coordinates. How should we upload them? Should we create another iNat user, or should one of us upload them and note that it's from the Midpen study?

@merav, either way is fine with me. Do you need help with this?

Posted by truthseqr over 3 years ago

I might. For now, I'm still trying to fix these problems. Once it's all set, we can decide how to deal with it.
