I made this field to help keep track of the occasional fossil observation that's added.

We used to track fossils as one of the drop-down values in our field "Animal sign and song" but that wasn't as elegant (e.g., there were fossil plants). Having a separate fossil field also allows us to also add "Animal sign and song" to observations with values like "Shell/exoskeleton", or "Scat" for the coprolites.

I could add that while fossil observations are welcome, the iNaturalist tree of life doesn't attempt to maintain all of the extinct species.

Posted by jon_sullivan almost 8 years ago

I've just added "sub-fossil" to the drop-down list for use flagging observations of centuries extinct remains that have not yet fossilized (such as New Zealand's extinct moa).

So in the data quality page, should something marked fossil not be marked "recent evidence of organism"? They seem incompatible.
