Observer

kathymcaleese

Date

May 3, 2024 03:27 PM CDT

Description

These tiny plants were mixed in with Bulbostylis capillaris in the median along the trail from Pine Pond to JD Creek. I harvested a handful of about 100 Bulbostylis culms and discovered about 10 culms of the Cyperus mixed in. The area was heavily burned in the 2022 fire and dead trees have recently been removed along the dirt road/trail. The plants are growing in sandy loam with some sun exposure. The 5th photo shows the achene below and the hyaline inner scale above it. The scale is as large as the achene and was wrapped around it, consistent with Cyperus hemidrummondii.
