Description

This morning I searched the very high-up drift from the hurricane, which was nearly all plant debris, looking for land snail shells.

I found these Daedalochila shells.
I think the two on the left are a different species, somewhat smaller and with somewhat different lip structure around the aperture.

All but one of these are adult shells. The one on the lower right is a juvenile.

Yet another fragment of this gorgeous species. See previous observation.

José Leal, curator of the museum, says that from Sanibel in the museum collection, they have one or two very small whole shells, and some fragments, but as yet no whole large shells of this species.

Description

Three large fragments of a shell or shells of the Emperor Helmet.

I found them on top of the big shell pile that formed after the big cold front came across with stormy weather.

No other shellers seemed to have noticed them, large though they are, I suppose because they are just fragments, but this is a very notable and rather rare species here on Sanibel.

Many thanks to José Leal, the Curator of the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, who kindly made these photos after I donated these shell fragments (and some other very uncommon shells) to the museum.

Description

These land snail shells were on the uppermost part of the upper beach platform, where a lot of plant debris was pushed up by the hurricane.

The third image also includes some shells of Polygyra cereolus, in order to show more precisely the size of this shell.

I found these when the daylight was fading -- I plan to search for more land snail shells in the same place tomorrow morning.
