Welcome fellow monarch lovers! Monarch Waystation Soundmap a multi-year initiative to plant milkweed and native wildflowers on roadsides throughout Western Monarch migratory habitat. In the past few years, we've gone on several bicycle tours following the migration of the monarchs from the Pacific Northwest to the Central California coast. Along the way, we create monarch waystations by planting milkweed and wildflowers on roadsides and other underutilized land, and create music and sound recordings to tell the story of the monarch's migration and the landscapes we ride through. Since 2020, we've sowed the seeds of over 100 waystations. Check out our waystation posts here: monarchwaystationsoundmap.com.
This iNaturalist project expands upon our website in two ways:
1) This map documents our milkweed and monarch sightings along our trail. These sightings contribute to a larger citizen-science database that will improve our understanding of the distribution and phenology of monarchs and milkweeds and identify important monarch breeding areas and migratory corridors. Feel free to add a milkweed/monarch sighting of your own and tag us!
2) This project is also an invitation for interested MWS participants to visit one of our waystations and/or create their own waystation. The idea of visiting a waystation is to be able to check up on it, water it, and perhaps plant more seeds in the area. GPS coordinates of all our waystations can be found on our website. The creation of a waystation would involve planting native milkweed seeds and/or wildflowers somewhere along Western monarch's migratory corridors and documenting it with a photo, blog post, and a sound recording.
Reach out to us with any questions. Thanks!
