The purpose of this project is to track populations of psilocybin-containing mushrooms that cause Wood-lover Paralysis (WLP). WLP is a toxidrome featuring varying degrees of muscle paralysis resulting from the consumption of certain lignicolous (“wood-loving”) species of mushrooms from the genus Psilocybe. These species are typically from Psilocybe section subaeruginosae.

It is highly likely WLP will happen from patches that have caused the toxidrome before. This is an opportunity to help others be safe AND help research.

Please include an accurate location, and where possible provide photos or descriptions of the habitat and substrate. iNaturalist does not provide an option for anonymous observations, in which case we suggest contacting us directly, or creating a throwaway account.

In time it would be great to have genomes and chemical profiles of each spot in order to be able to have a better understanding of the compound/s involved, and a better understanding of the populations.

For those located in Australia, you can submit samples of the culprit mushrooms for analysis in order to gain a better understanding of the compounds involved. If you experience WLP and have a sample you can submit get in touch with @sybeck or @cainebarlow please.
