Small ants approximately 6mm in length. This particular nest has been in the same location for at least 26 years. (At the time of the property purchase). During the morning hours they cluster together tightly into one large mound of approximately 4 or 5cm in diameter and 1 cm thick. On a few occasions I observed the mound of ants resembling the size and shape of a table tennis ball. After mid day they essentially disappear under ground. Very slow moving.

Nest in soil and on underside of rock. One ant (perhaps more) had a distended gaster and wing buds. The distended gaster looked like it was for food storage - so I don't think this was a queen.
