Cannonball Jelly (Stomolophus meleagris)

Observer

fmoretzsohn

Date

September 14, 2011

Description

Several individuals of the large Cannonball or Cabbage Jellyfish, Stomolophus meleagris, were observed at Copano Bay during a research cruise to study oyster health. The photos are not clear but there were several dozen jellyfish near one of the stations.

The jellyfish were about 20-25 cm (8-10 in) long. This is a common species found in bays and nearshore in Texas.

See more about this species at the Biodiversity of the Gulf of Mexico (BioGoMx) database at:
http://gulfbase.org/biogomx/biospecies.php?species=Spp-18-0033
