Sessile-flowered Trilliums (Subgenus Sessilia)

Observer

Date

April 2, 2020 02:55 PM HST

Description

adjacent to a creek, in damp floodplain type of habitat.

I'm going back out to measure leaves and to smell the flower. I will update shortly.

Per references: Trillium cuneatum has a pleasant faint spicy or banana scent. Trillium sessile's odor has been described as rotten meat.
T. sessile is the smaller of the two with leaves only to about 7.5cm (3") long.
T. cuneatum has leaves wedge-shaped at the base and broad to 15cm (6") long and petals to 7.5cm (3") long.
Where the anther splits and the pollen is released is totally different on the two species--In T.cuneatum the anther dehiscense is latrorse in the T. sessile it is introrse (http://getyourbotanyon.blogspot.com/2010/11/trillium-cuneatum.html).
