Shape: Understory tree
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: elongated cluster – catkin, male; ¾-2 ¼ inches long, red/brown, composed of tightly closed scales, female; 1/8-1/2 inch long, green, nondescript

Leaves: oval, pointed tip, double toothed, finely hairy, 2-5 inches long and 1-2 inches wide
Bark: grey/brown, long “stripy” textured rectangular plates
Fruit/Seed: elongated cluster of inflated, 1/3-1 inch long papery sacs
Height: 20-50 feet
Flowering: April - May
Habitat: hardwood forest, upland slopes, wooded bluffs, old fields
