The Blue-headed Parrot is the most widespread of its genus. It is easily recognized in flight by its squeaky but slightly raucous calls, while at rest the striking blue head renders the species unmistakable. The intensity of the blue colour and its extent varies between the three recognized subspecies. The Blue-headed Parrot ranges from Costa Rica south across much of northern South America, including a large part of Amazonia, as well as in the lowlands of the northern Atlantic Forest region. It is found in most forest types and at altitudes up to 1400 m, and the Blue-headed Parrot is perhaps one of the most adaptable and numerous parrot species in the Neotropics, regularly visiting agricultural areas to feed on maize and rice. A wide range of fruits has been recorded in its diet.
