The Peregrine Falcon has a complex distribution in the Neotropics. There is a resident subspecies, cassini, in western South America and the Southern Cone. In addition, migratory subspecies from North America, winter throughout much of the region, south well into South America. All populations primarily feed on birds, which are captured on the wing in spectacular plunges from great height. Indeed the Peregrine Falcon is oft cited as the fastest organism in the world, regularly reaching 150 mph during these stoops. The Peregrine Falcon has a wide range of prey species, with over 300 different species of prey recorded in the Northern Hemisphere, including pigeons and doves, waterfowl, parrots and even petrels.
