Summary 3

Are a dumpy bird (25.4cm/10in) with a stout bill and short, yellow legs. They are grey with a white spotted belly that extends to under their tail. Adults have rufous markings on the upper portion of their wings that are tipped with black and are more speckled over their bodies with white and dark spots.

Trophic strategy 4

During the nesting season feeds primarily on insects (e.g., beetles, flies, caterpillars, bees, ants). Also eats snails and seeds. During the rest of the year feeds along rocky coasts on crustaceans and small mollusks (Bent 1929).
