Fundy Nature Notes, Quotes and Anecdotes 2

Chalk-fronted Corporal / La julienneLadona julia)

Size: 38-44 mm (~1.6 inches)

Status/Habitat: Common in New Brunswick in appropriate habitat. Prefers still waters, especially boggy ponds, also marshy bays of lakes with acidic waters and lots of decaying organic matter: also some slower streams.

Flight period in New Brunswick: May 17th-August 27th

ID Hints: The "corporal" stripes on the top of the thorax of the mature males are definitely distinctive, but watch out for the rusty brown young males and females, as they look like a very different critter!

Nature Notes: This is one of Fundy National Park's signature species. It is certainly one of the species seen most often by visitors. In late spring and early summer, it is likely the most abundant species in the park. In late June, this species is so thick at MacLaren Pond across from the Visitors Centre, that on sunny days, clouds of them lift off as you walk towards them along the path.
