Delta-spotted Spiketail / Cordulégastre aux yeux séparés
(Cordulegaster diastatops)
Adult size: 59-65 mm. Averages considerably smaller than the Twin-spotted Spiketail, which is 64-76 mm.
First Fundy record: July 12th, 1982 , Laverty Lake (T.W. Donnelly)
Status/Habitat: Widespread and relatively common in the region. This dragonfly apparently prefers sandy-bottomed streams and spring-fed trickles in open areas without significant tree cover, such as those created in former beaver ponds. It also uses roadside ditches where there is flowing water.
Flight period in New Brunswick: June 8th-September 3rd
ID Hints: Besides being smaller than its counterpart the Twin-spotted, the Delta-spotted's "spots" are placed more laterally. In the female, the yellow spotting is more extensive than on the male. Indeed, the yellow markings of some females may form nearly a continuous stripe down the side.
Nature Notes This dragonfly hunts in full sun in open areas, often along or near its home stream, but it may also wander a fair distance from water as well..
