Dot-tailed Whiteface / Leucorrhine mouchetée

Size: 28-32 mm

First Fundy record: July 1st, 2015, MacLaren Pond (Denis Doucet)

Status/Habitat: Common in much of southern New Brunswick, but mostly absent from the Caledonia Highlands and the Fundy Coast. This species is more widespread and less tied to boreal habitats than its congeners. It occurs in a wide variety of slow water habitats such as ponds and lakes, but uncommon to rare in boggy and more acidic, lentic waters.

Flight Period: May 21st to August 23rd in New Brunswick; Maritime dates

ID Hints: The combination of white face and all-dark body with the tiny yellow dot on the dorsal surface of segment 7 (S7) of the abdomen is unique in our area.

Nature Notes: Males frequently perch on floating vegetation, such as Bullhead Lilies and Water Lilies.
