Variable Darner / Aeschne domino

Aeshna interrupta

Fundy Nature Notes, Quotes and Anecdotes 2

Variable Darner / Aeschne domino
(Aeshna interrupta)

Size: 66-78 mm

First Fundy record: July 20th, 2013. Several were netted that day by participants of the weekly Bio-Blitz program at the park.

Status/Habitat: Common in the region and the park. This is one of the three most common Darner species here and readily found in swarms of Darners in the park and surroundings. It breeds in beaver ponds, lakes, rivers, bogs and fens.

Flight Period in New Brunswick: June 21st-October 12th

ID Hints: Its scientific name "interrupta" refers to the first thoracic stripe which is usually interrupted, i.e split into two spots. Occasionally you will find a Variable Darner in which the stripe is NOT split, but it is always very thin. Also, most of our common mosaic darners like the Canada, Shadow, Lance-tipped and Black-tipped all have a plain, unmarked face, while the Variable has a stripe running along the middle horizontally. Three of the other facially striped mosaic darner species (Zig Zag, Subarctic, Sedge) are mostly restricted to bogs, so the only other common species which has a striped face is the Lake.
