Twin-spotted Spiketail / Cordulégastre maculé
(Cordulegaster maculata)

Adult size: Large- 64-76 mm

First Fundy record: First found in the park by Thomas W. Donnelly, Odonotalogist from NY, USA on July 13th, 1982.
Site specimen collected is recorded as Laverty Brook, 45.661636N, 65.032187W

Status /Habitat: This is a common species in the Canadian Maritimes. During the current survey of the Odonata of Fundy NP begun in 2013, the species had not been recorded as of early 2016, but it is probably relatively common in the right habitat. This is a species of small to mid-sized, clean, clear forest streams, often found in shady situations. Its preferred watercourses are often characterized as "trout streams".

Flight period in New Brunswick: May 13th-August 17th

ID hints: This dark brown and yellow species, easily one of our largest dragonflies, shows distinctive, paired abdominal spots dorsally which are also visible laterally. Nevertheless, they are not as laterally placed as those on its congener, the Delta-spotted Spiketail.

Nature notes: This species hunts predominantly in the shadows of along forested streams, but occasionally come out into the sunlight.
