Phanogomphus borealis

Fundy Nature Notes, Quotes and Anecdotes 2

Beaverpond Clubtail / Gomphe boréal
(Gomphus borealis)

Size: 44-49 mm

First Fundy record: June 6th, 2013 at the old beaver pond not far from the entrance to the Caribou Plain trail. It is common at that site in June, easily observable from the boardwalk where there is a belvedere.

Status/Habitat: Uncommon to locally common in appropriate habitat in New Brunswick. As its name indicates, this is a species that is found at colder water features such as streams with beaver dams and colder, spring-fed ponds.

Flight period in New Brunswick: June 3rd to July 23rd

ID Hints: The Beaverpond Clubtail is one of the more brightly coloured species of its clan. The thick, pale, dorsal thorax stripe is quite distinctive, as well.
