Harlequin Darner / Aeschne pygmée
(Gomphaeschna furcillata)

Size: 53-60 mm

First Fundy record: *** Not yet known for Fundy ***

Status/Habitat: Uncommon to rare in the southern half of New Brunswick, apparently absent from northern New Brunswick.
Look for this dragonfly in the treed border of bogs and alder swales nearby.

Flight period in New Brunswick: May 25th - August 13th

ID Hints: This small, early season, camouflage-patterned Darner is certainly good at being inconspicuous. I have found that it likes areas on the edge of bogs that are are "messy", such as alder swales.

Nature Notes: This Darner may be active on days that are quite windy. It is an active patroller, often flying its bog edge beat non-stop for long periods. When it finally settles down to perch, it tends to do so vertically on tree trunks
