Green-striped Darner / Aeschne verticale
(Aeshna verticalis)

Size: 62-72 mm

First Fundy record: Not yet recorded in Fundy NP, but is very likely hereStatus/Habitat: Uncommon and local in New Brunswick; mostly occurs in fens and some bogs, as well as smaller, forest lakes, spring-fed ponds and slower streams with fair to generous aquatic vegetation cover, especially sedges.

Flight period in New Brunswick: July 17th-October 21st

ID Hints: The all green first thoracic pale stripe, along with the thicker and widening flag (top of the stripe pointing rearwards), along with the slightly less notched leading edge of the stripe than that of a Canada's are often signs for this species, but the overlap with the Canada Darner's stripe shape means that this should also be confirmed in hand with the shape of the male hamules and the smooth upper surface of its superior claspers.

Nature Notes: This species is said to hover for extended periods over the same location. It also tends to perch vertically in trees more frequently than most Darners. It also feeds into the evening until dusk.
