What
Peninsular Cooter (Pseudemys peninsularis)Observer
carpkillerDescription
Actually found along Penasquitos Creek, just north of Mira Mesa (San Diego, CA). Most local creeks have red eared sliders, and even a few Western Pond Turtles. This one was very large (female?) with a shell about a foot from long.
What
Sacred Datura (Datura wrightii)Observer
carpkillerDescription
Taking a picture of Jimson Weed flowers in the closed position at night. The flash from my camera woke the bees sleeping inside; four of them crawled out and buzzed at me for disturbing them.
What
Brown Widow (Latrodectus geometricus)Observer
carpkillerDescription
The brown widows took over the black widow's turf in the 17 years I lived in this location....as their online profile suggested they would.
What
Genus OrgyiaObserver
carpkillerDescription
This guy is not afraid of anything. It crawled up like it was going to eat my camera.....
What
Underwing Moths (Genus Catocala)Observer
carpkillerDescription
found on an oak tree. Purple underside.
What
Southern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus ssp. helleri)Observer
carpkillerDescription
Small snake, perhaps 14 inches long. Definitely not in any dormant/hibernation mode
What
Australian Spotted Jelly (Phyllorhiza punctata)Observer
carpkillerDescription
Not a native jelly. Perhaps came to visit friends at SeaWorld. It was swimming around in the Mariner's Basin area of Mission Bay.
This jelly was about a foot in diameter, and was nearly 2 feet below the surface...so the eelgrass blade floating above it kinda skews the scale.
The picture is kinda lousy...but not so bad when you consider it was taken with one of those cardboard disposable 35mm cameras.
What
Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus)Observer
carpkillerDescription
Was on the Pecos River in New Mexico and spend half an hour in windy conditions to get a looong blurry shot of a very shy bird...only to find it was a black-necked stilt...just like the pic already had, from Sweetwater Reservoir.
