Description

Also known as Candlesnuff fungus. Sunny, bright and cool day (~45F). Found growing on hardwood stump and up from ground on the roots of stump. Next to the trail under mixed hardwood and softwood forest. Group habit, covered the stump everywhere. Upright, black to velvety at base, turning grey to pure white at tip. Tip covered in white spores which release when touched. Single, unbranched form is cylindrical, while slightly branches form becomes somewhat ovoid. 4.5cm or less in height, ~1/4cm wide. It looks like a group of white-tipped black coral.

Description

Sunny, cool (45F), overnight temp (<32). Found at St. Edwards Park, trail on the right headed down to Lake Washington. Grows in rows on dead hardwood blown down. No stem noticed, fan shaped. Edge can be wavy or smooth. Top is fuzzy with concentric rings of dark brown to buff/grey/brown with a bright white layer on outermost edge. Underside is pure, luminescent white with tiny pores visible all over. Fungus is thicker than Stereum hirsuta. Largest collected was 3.5cm across and smallest was 2.5cm. Spores are white.

Description

Grey, overcast, sprinkling. Found on hummus on ground at drip edge of western red cedar. Fruiting in small clumps, but overall large group. Largest specimen was 2.5cm tall and 2cm wide. The stem is almost as wide as the top.

Description

Sunny, clear and cool day (~45F). Found growing scattered on leaf litter and hummus under mixed conifers and deciduous forest. Older growth of cedar and fir. Found beside trail at St. Edward's park. Largest cap is 10.5cm across and stem is 18-20 m tall, 1cm thick somewhat uniformly down to base. Double- sided moveable ring 2/3 of the way up the stem. Cap is white with brown spot in the center. Cap has grey-brown scales covering it. Gills are free and white. Stem bruises brown with handling and flesh bruises quite orange. Spores are white. Immature shape is round like a drumstick.

Description

Grey, overcast day. Found in the backyard garden on 74ave NE Kirkland growing in clumps on hummus and wood chip mulch. Under mature Douglas Fir and rhodies. Largest cap collected was 11.5cm in diameter, 12inches tall and stem was 2in wide uniformly from cap to base. Cap is convex, white-buff with a grey spot in the center, turning darker grey brown with age. Moveable ring on stem 2/3way up. Cap is scaly and very viscous in rain. Gills are free, crowded, broad and brown to buff-pink-salmon. Stem is pithy, white inside. No noticed staining or swelling of stem at base. Spores are chocolate brown in color.

Description

Cloudy, grey, overcast. Growing in a tight group all over a dead snag, believed to be larch or pine or fir? Located in a partial clearing under several Douglas firs. Cap is broad, bright yellow to orange and covered with a highly viscous brown/rust-colored goo. Cap has scales. Largest cap collected measures nearly 6cm across. Stem is hollow and yellow with scales on the bottom 2/3; ~1/2cm wide at base. Gills are attached and light yellow and fade to a light yellow/salmon color. Gills covered by a partial veil when young. Gills are close and adenate. Spores are brown.

Description

Cloudy, grey overcast with scattered showers. Single, solitary specimen growing on maple/madrona blowdown underneath other madrona trees, near wild apple. 7 cm tall, cap is ~1.5 cm wide, stem is <1/2cm wide at apex to >1/2 cm wide at base. Stem is striated and somewhat mottled and pale lavender in color near cap darkening to dusky lavender at the base. Stem is hollow with an orangey pith inside. Cap is convex with a "double hump" and a slight dimple in the middle. Cap is velvety and beautiful indigo/purple. Gills are attached and subdistant and lighter purple than cap.

Description

Cloudy, overcast day. Growing in clumps on dead cedar log on trail at Bastyr U campus. Second growth forest. Shelf-like conch, fuzzy on top with concentric colors in bands. Outermost edge is white. Underside is buff to tan where attached to tree. No stem present. No pores visible on underside. Fungus is very thin with a wavy margin. The largest collected was 4cm in diameter and the smallest was <1cm.

Description

Cloudy, overcast, drizzle. Near trail on Bastyr U property. Growing in groups on hummus under conifers. 6.5cm tall, cap is 1.5 cm wide. Cap is blunted conical, dusky tan at Alex fading at edge and striated. Edge is wavy and there are very small white pieces along edge. Stem is hollow and white, very slender. Gills are wavy. Spores are black.

Description

Overcast, rainy, cloudy. Growing in clusters in larger numbers on dead fir under a mature Doug fir. Cap is creamy-white aging to buffish, with a wavy margin on the older/larger ones. Cap edge is slightly involuted on younger ones. Spores are white. Stalk is lateral and not seen from above. Gills are large, decurrent and white but turn creamy with age. Largest cap gathered was 10cm in diameter smallest 1cm.

Description

Overcast, raining. Found on trail on Bastyr U campus. Growing in a clump on a dead big-leaf maple branch on the ground. Edge is wavy, and top is white to off-white. Top is fillamentous, yellowish with scales (maybe scales?). Gills on underside are white to buff and unequal. NO stem. Spores are brown. Attached to log on one side (off center). Smallest collected was 1cm in diameter; largest was 4.5cm.

Description

Also known as "Orange Peel Fungus". Located growing beside the wood-chip walkway next to the Hawthorn tree at Bastyr gardens. Bright orange cup-like fungus. Edges are somewhat irregular; inside of cup is bright orange and outside is somewhat more creamy-orange. Grows in clumps. Smaller ones are perfectly round/cup like. Specimen is 2.5 cm tall and ~3cm wide at top edge of cup. Also overcast day with drizzle.

Description

LBM (little brown mushroom). Cap is dark brown with veins/gills seen through. Gills are wide set, tan/grey near the cap turning to white at the bottom edge. Cap is 2.5cm wide. Stem is 2mm wide and 5.5cm long. Some gills are longer than others. Found growing in herb bed in hummus along side of Tussilago. Grown scattered throughout bed/ somewhat solitary.

Description

Also known as "chicken of the woods". This particular specimen was found growing on and old cherry tree. It may actually be a subspecies, as conifericola grows predominately on conifers in the Pacific NW. These fungi had an opportunistic fungus growing on some of them (the bluish fuzz in the photos). Grows in clumps.

Description

Found in Maine! Day was cool and somewhat overcast. Found by my husband growing in the lawn near the granite foundation of the house. He said this was almost 4inches tall when he took the photo! This is an immature example, the veil bits can be seen on top of the cap and the gills are still covered by a partial veil. At full maturity, this could reach up to 40cm across. He was firmly advised to "don't eat that!"

Description

Found in Bastyr garden, growing on wood chips in the pathway. Day was cloudy/overcast. Mushroom as bright rust orange cap. Slender white stem that has a veil remenant and turns rust orange at the base. Unattached buff-colored gills. Stem is pithy in the center. Grows in clumps. Found at 430pm near the gazebo in the Bastyr garden.
