Lycaena Butterflies (Genus Lycaena)Observer

Found flying and landing on various plants around the edge of cultivated human habitat, in the cleared area behind my house. There is a small garden of edibles and very nearby regenerated native forest of predominantly totara and nikau. The nearest muehlenbeckia specimens known are about 500m away. The specimen was present throughout the day yesterday and today, (identified by the notches in it's wings).

The two smaller specimens were found hibernating in window frames and the larger specimen in a hollowed out kamahi. I noticed this species for the first time this past Summer, and they have grown in number until groups of adults began hibernating for the Winter in dry places. It is of note that most of the hibernating individuals have already left due to this mild Winter.
