These pics were sent to me by a friend and I mainly want to give her a good ID. She said she bought two maples from a nursery and they threw this one in for free. I base the possible ID on the size of the leaves (ca. 3 in.), the heart-shaped leaves (some of them) and the distinct venation of the leaves. One source said the leaves are opposite but another said they can be opposite or alternate. These appear to be alternate. One source said the tree can be 40 ft., up to 100 ft. tall; another said it can be much-branched from the base like a shrub, as this one is.
