Silver-haired Bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans)Observer
tapaculo99Description
very strange observation! I think this bat was attacked by a woodpecker. heard some noise from up in the tree, then saw this bat come falling down to the ground
a Red- bellied Woodpecker came flying down behind it from the same immediate area and landed low on a tree behind it. The bird appeared to be interested in following the bat to the ground but was afraid to approach as I was sitting quite close. After hopping from branch to branch a couple times the woodpecker flew back up and continued foraging up in the tree somewhere.
I approached the bat to find it looking battered on its back, wings spread out. quite a bit of the hair on its back was missing, but no sign of blood. poked a stick at it to give it something to grab onto and then at least put it back up onto a tree, but I'm not sure if it was able to fly. it could at least fold its wings up underneath it as the last pic shows, and eventually it rearranged its position on the trunk slightly, so it could crawl.
