The purpose of the Arkansas Quail Mapping Project is to gain a better understanding of the distribution and density of quail in Arkansas.
The northern bobwhite was dubbed "Prince of the Game Birds" by Charles Elliot in his book of the same title. It's a fitting title, seldom disputed by bird watchers and hunters alike. However, because of habitat loss, the once vast bobwhite quail kingdom has been reduced to remnant fields, cut-over woodlands and abandoned home-sites in rural Arkansas. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has joined with many local, regional and national partners to restore habitat for this important game species.
We are gathering location data for adult quail and chicks. Photos are preferred, but not required. The data collected under this project will be used to help inform conservation planning and management for quail.
This project is overseen by the Arkansas Quail Task Force. This is a group of state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and universities working together to conserve quail and quail habitat.
