Mystery solved: How flies “scuba dive” at California’s famed Mono Lake.

The alkali fly — a critical food source for millions of migratory birds, including many of the gulls that fly along California’s beaches every year — can plunge with ease, staying underwater for up to 15 minutes and venturing as far as 20 feet below the surface.
