The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville (UCLG) is interested in mitigating turtle-vehicle collisions in their jurisdiction. UCLG is working with the Algonquin to Adirondacks Collaborative (A2A) Road Ecology Committee to conduct a study to identify turtle mortality hotspots on County roads to develop appropriate mitigation measures. The A2A Road Ecology Committee consists of representatives of A2A, Thousand Islands National Park, Queen’s University, the Ontario Road Ecology Group, and Blazing Star Environmental. A2A has retained the services of Blazing Star Environmental to deliver this project, which is funded by UCLG and Parks Canada. This project is in collaboration with several local organizations.
This project is primarily focused on turtles, snakes, and species at risk, however, we welcome observations of all organisms directly on County roads, associated road shoulders, and adjacent habitat (e.g., within 30-50 m of roads). County roads are fairly well-signed. If you're not sure if you're on a County road, please still upload your observation. It will help inform subsequent studies in the area. Feel free to post old and new observations. Thanks for your interest and support!
