As part of Nature Canada's new restoration program we are looking to invite Canadians to engage in the restoration of our natural environment. In the face of the current climate and biodiversity crises, restoration provides a hopeful avenue by which we can all affect change, no matter if it is in your apartment building or your neighborhood, your backyard or throughout your city!
Pollinators are critical to the health of the environment and subsequently to human health. The problem, is that there is a general trend of decline in native pollinator species such as bees, ants, beetles, butterflies and more, with several species lost completely and others drastically diminished. This decline can be largely attributed to loss of habitat, due to mono-culture planting and urbanization, use of herbicides and pesticides, disease and parasites, unpredictable climate and many small compounding factors.
The good news is that we can do something about it!
Pollinator gardens provide much needed food and habitat for species. Increasing availability of these resources lessens some of the pressure from these populations helping them to recover and continue their very important work!
We aim to create a community with resources, conversation and support to help you create your pollinator garden. From designing your space and choosing your plants through to identification of species and troubleshooting challenges. This platform will help anybody meaningfully engage in restoration by building their own pollinator garden!
