Área Natural Protegida (ANP) decretada el 24 de julio de 1998 con casi 12 mil hectáreas que incluye cinco de las nueve bahías de Huatulco: San Agustín, Chachacual, Cacaluta, Maguey y Órgano, integradas por ecosistemas prioritarios para la conservación con la selva baja caducifolia, arrecifes de coral y manglares.
El PNH integra parte del Sitio Ramsar 1321"Cuencas y Corales de la Zona Costera de Huatulco" 44,400 hectáreas destinadas para el uso racional de los humedales, designado por la Convención Ramsar en 2003 y por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO) designa a esta ANP y al Municipio de Santa María Huatulco como Reserva de la Biosfera en el 2006, a través de su programa Man and Biosphere (MAB).
