New Projects Added

The first projects have been created for ForestrySA Native Forest Reserves. Each has been added to this umbrella project. Most are from the "Mount Lofty Ranges" and "Green Triangle" forests. Only around 1/3 of the native forest reserves have been added so far. Most currently have no iNat observations and are just waiting for someone to visit and upload whatever they find. The list of projects added is shown below. More to come.

Knott Hill Native Forest Reserve
Mount Panorama Native Forest Reserve
Christmas Hill Native Forest Reserve
Kalumunda Native Forest Reserve
Springs Road Native Forest Reserve
Congertinga Native Forest Reserve
Coralinga Native Forest Reserve
Cudlee Creek Native Forest Reserve
Mount Gawler Native Forest Reserve
Little Mount Crawford Native Forest Reserve
Kersbrook Native Forest Reserve
Watts Gully Native Forest Reserve

Good stuff Geoff. I was thinking of doing this myself to pick up these places. I've noticed that any observations that have obscured coordinates are not being included. Other projects get round this by having the option to share the coordinates with the project admin, either automatically or on a case by case basis according to a radio button setting. Are you able to add this? Not sure if just adding it to the umbrella project would feed through to all projects or if it has to be added to each individually.

Hi Ralph,

It looks like this feature is only available with ‘traditional’ projects and not the new ‘collection’ and ‘umbrella’ projects. There is a good overview here explaining some of the trade offs in the changes: https://www.inaturalist.org/blog/15450-announcing-changes-to-projects-on-inaturalist. There are some good discussions at the end of the article too.

The “collections” projects are not much more than fancy place filters. They do not include any obscured observations (unless the obscured location happens to still fall within the project place boundary). I’m hoping as these projects are public places iNat users will keep their observation locations public, however this still won’t help with those observations automatically obscured for conservation reasons.

I’ve also read that any observation with an ‘accuracy’ range that crosses outside the project place boundary is excluded from the project. I think it was designed this way to avoid including observations with very large accuracy (i.e. hundreds of km) in every project within that accuracy range. Most of the ‘places’ I’ve created for projects have boundaries close to the real boundary of the park. I’m a little concerned that observations taken along some park boundary tracks may get excluded. If you see any observations close to boundaries that have been excluded, let me know and I can widen the ‘place’ boundary.
