Local Observations Missing Dates - Resolved

Recently some observations in SA from new users have been uploaded with the dates missing. The result is that the observations are automatically marked as Casual, are less likely to receive an ID and do not sync with the Atlas of Living Australia. This has recently been identified as an issue with the time zone specified in the users device. This has now been resolved by iNat staff and as as a consequence it appears these observations have had their dates restored and as such are now Verifiable. This has also given SA a boost to the number of observers and observations.

Observations I made yesterday are still coming through without the Observed date. These are obs entered using the Android app, where I select a photo off my phone (rather than take one with the app). I believe I have the latest version of the app. I need to go to the web version and edit to save the Obs date.

@dgobbett Thanks for the info. I checked local Casual obs the other day and noticed a few of the recent ones missing dates. (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?quality_grade=casual) The date taken is still in the photo metadata, so I think a fix should be possible without having to edit each photo. The fact that it appears to occur with photos taken outside the app, then uploaded with the app, might help with investigation. I'll follow up with iNat staff (@tiwane).

@dgobbett can you please try this again and send the following to help@inaturalist.org so we can investigate this?

the original photo being uploaded, full size and with all of its metadata, so we can test it.

a screenshot of the observation details page before you save it. Here are instructions for how to take a screenshot on several types of devices: https://www.take-a-screenshot.org

log files from the app once you upload it and make sure the date did not go through. To send log files, go to the Settings tab in the app and tap three times on the version number. You will then have the option to email the log files to us.
