Trent University is updating the Trent Lands and Nature Areas Plan, aimed at assisting the University to achieve its vision of a ‘sustainable and inspiring campus community, thoughtfully integrating the natural and built environments, with vibrant spaces to learn, innovate, be active and live’. A key input to the plan is mapping natural features and recording the biodiversity on our lands.
While experts from North-South Environmental will be completing targeted field inventories on select parcels of Trent’s land over the next year, we want the Trent and Peterborough communities to add to our knowledge base. Share your nature sightings to help support our understanding of site-specific information, and the occurrence and abundance of flora and fauna at Trent. Your observations will contribute to our understanding of the natural heritage features and functions within the campus, and how we can support and enhance biodiversity, appropriate land use, teaching and research, and a vibrant natural environment.
Thank you in advance for any observations you're able to contribute. We are hoping to gather as much information as possible, so please spread the word to help us better understand Trent’s Lands and Nature Areas!
Please note that only observations which meet the following rules can be added to the Project:
• Observers must allow project curators to view coordinates;
• Locations are georeferenced (i.e., mapped in iNaturalist);
• Occurrences must be able to be verified by project curators;
• Observed within the Trent Lands and Nature Areas as defined in the Project map
For verification purposes, we strongly prefer records with photos, but audio recordings will be accepted, and if necessary, validated by our curators in the field. Some species (including many plants) are difficult to identify and require seeing certain features to confirm ID. Please take multiple photos (eg. flower, leaf, whole plant) to capture as many of these features in your observations.
