UC Santa Cruz Fungal Herbarium Sequencing Project

The UCSC Fungal Herbarium comprises thousands of specimens of mushrooms and other fungi collected primarily from coastal California, especially Santa Cruz County.

The UCSC collection is special: The collections cover our county fairly thoroughly (is that ever truly possible for fungal biodiversity?), a high percentage of the collections are accompanied by photos, and many of the collections are recent (in better shape for sequencing and re-inspection).

Additionally, microscopic data accompanies many of the collections, and more of the specimens are being worked on by a small but dedicated body of undergraduate students, graduate researchers and community members doing thesis projects, ecology research or independent studies.

A DNA sequencing project focused on the macrofungi of Santa Cruz County, California. We aim to generate an increasingly comprehensive resource for well-photographed, microscopically documented, DNA-sequenced, and vouchered mycoflora for Santa Cruz County. less ↑
