Dead ants
During our lunch stop I noticed several (at least 10) dead ants attached by their jaws at the tips of grasses and, in one case, a Crassula flower. I may be way off-base here, but could this be the work of the dastardly Ophiocordyceps? The only flaw in my theory is that I don't see any actual sign of fungus.
PS My source for the suggestion is at around 11 minutes into this video I often quote : http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/ng-live/varma-parasites-lecture-nglive
Update: 4.3.2017 - new pics added : the sampled ants frequently lost their heads such was their death grip on the vegetation. Pic of sampled ants packed ready to be sent off.

One of the most wonderful sounds of the Vumba must be the eerie humming of distant fog horns on misty nights. Obviously no fishing port nearby at 1700 m altitude in the mountains, the sounds are the calls of the mysterious Buff-spotted Flufftails in the forests around our house. These birds are often heard but never seen until one day the guy in the photo casually walked into the lounge of our guesthouse and parked himself at our bar. He stayed for quite a while but didn't drink much and he did not become a regular.

Erica glabella
The corolla has four lobes which rules out labalis and leaves us with glabella, similis or ericoides.
The leaves are 4-nate which doesn't really help to narrow it down.
It's not similis which has long white hairs on the caly, whereas glabella and ericoides have short white hairs.
Therefore either glabella or ericoides.
The bract and bractioles of ericoides are adpressed to the corrolla, whereas for glabella the bract is on the main stem and the bractioles are either minute or absent.
For glabella the ridges on the calyx tube alternate with the calyx lobes.
Therefore glabella. Since subsp.laevis doesn't occur on the peninsula, that leaves only subsp. glabella .
