At this spot at Spring Creek Forest Preserve there is caliche with no obvious soil on top, still, plenty of plants manage to grow there. Looking closer at the ground, I saw these "things", and I can only guess that it is some type of fungi, or maybe moss. I don't even know if I'm looking at one organism, or several, so in the second picture I have marked the three different types of whatever it is with arrows of various colors.

Funny story... I was looking for leafmines on American Elm and this Leaf-footed bug egg just happened to be on a leaf with a mine. I considered it a 2-for-1 and collected them both! When I was photographing the leaf mine, I noticed the eye spots and had to get a closer look. This pic makes me smile. :) The little one was relocated to my garden after his/her photoshoot.

I think this is a Crested Coralroot orchid.
I've been to this park many times, but this is my first sighting of Crested Coralroot orchid in Williamson county.
I'll go back few days later to check on them. Hopefully they will survive.
Edited: 2 out of 5 plants survived, the top part broke off but the lower part was still intact. There are lots mountain bikers, armadillos and feral pigs in this areas, I am glad some of these orchid made it!

This forested area was my first stop in the morning during a greenbelt-based excursion to observe the urban parks in the area. The plant diversity in these woods left a lot to be desired, but that was made up for several times over in the rewarding fungal diversity.

(The smaller, orange snake.) My mom texted me a photo of two snakes she found hanging out together while she was watering plants. ~3.5 hours later, they were still in the same area and I took some more photos. Sometimes the larger snake would move away a foot or two, and eventually the smaller one would slither over to it again. (There's another post for the other snake)

Cultured from soil (collected in my front yard) by placing slices of potato in soil slurry for about 24 hours, then washing slices off, dividing them into smaller pieces in non-chlorinated drinking water for another 16 hours. Small mycelial masses pulled off of potato pieces with a very fine-needle forceps, then mounted on a slide and examined under a microscope.

I’m unclear whether this is an oomycete, a fungus, or some other organism. It has what looks like the sporangia or oogonia of an oomycete, but also the septate hyphae of a true fungus.
