Leaves: modified leaves form a pitcher; red-purple or green in color; inner leaf surface covered in stiff, downward-angled hairs; tube is filled with water
Flowers: solitary flower at the end of a slender, leafless stalk; 5 reddish-purple or green sepals; 5 red incurved petals (not shown)
Other notes: carnivorous; prey are trapped within the pitcher and digested; the stiff hairs prevent prey from escaping

Four-toed Salamander (Hemidactylium scutatum)Observer

I found this salamander under a pine log (chain-sawed piece) on the side of the William C. O'Neill Bike Path. I had rolled the log over to look for salamanders. This individual was released unharmed at the location of capture.
